[ North Light, Kora, Kuyo, & Wanderer ]

Along Ashbreath shore, North raced towards Traveler's Spring, stumbling through the moonlight. "I will send letters," he thought to himself, "They will know what to do. They must."

Three owls flew before midnight, delivering panicked words to a Historian, an Archaeologist, and a Sorcerer.

"I need your help. Please come immediately. Meet me at the inn near Traveler's Spring.

I am afraid.
- North Light"

Kora folds the letter addressed to her father carefully before handing it over to be posted. To her surprise she receives a letter in return. With a quietly muttered thanks she leaves the small building.

Kameraad snorts at her approach. She pats his neck in greeting before slowly turning the letter over in her hands. She opens it and reads the lines several times before she sighs and rolls her eyes.

Now he wants help.” With practiced ease she pulls herself into the saddle. For a moment she looks to Austera in the distance and then to the road leading back to Traveler’s Spring. She shakes her head as she directs Kameraad towards the small town.

“I am afraid.” she mutters sarcastically to herself, rolling her eyes again for good measure.

Light crept through the window, and North felt safe enough to leave his room. The innkeeper, Hami, was preparing breakfast. She greeted him sternly, "I did not hear you sleep."

"Do I snore so loudly? I was busy with work," he lied. He could not hide the anxiety and self doubt on his face.

"Hmph," was the only reply he received.

North took a seat outside to wait on his friends, if they would even show up. The sky was dark and overcast, and the air was thick and humid. He heard rumors of a storm rolling in from the coast. Rain in this area was generally a blessing, but to North, it felt like something else.

In just the last few weeks, Vahn had seen more of the world than he ever could have dreamed of. Not only had he finally had the chance to explore his own homeland of Hasla, but he'd flown on an airship to Falcorth, then to Mahadevi, and gotten lost in the City of Towers. He'd flown back to Rookborne, and ridden to Perinoor, then back through Windscour, and to the airships in Rookborne again, returning a second time to Mahadevi. He explored Villanelle, writing feverishly all the way, then reversed course. He rode again to the city, through Tigerspine, and through the arid wastes of Arcum Iris and the Sunbite Wilds, where he witnessed what manner of cruelty the Warborn were truly treated with. By worldgate, he'd returned to Villanelle with a Warborn refugee, then sailed along the coast with a group of fishermen to Austera, and the Solis Headlands.

That was just a few days ago now, where Vahn had briefly reunited with new friends that he had made along his travels. There, he had hoped to bring at least two of his Warborn friends together, who he thought would each mutually benefit from one another's talents. And there, he had announced that he wanted to see Nuia, now that he had seen so much of Haranya.

Since then, he had returned once again to Lutesong, where he was preparing for a ride to and through the Silent Forest, and up to Ynystere, from which he hoped to start planning for that trip, and perhaps practicing his Nuian-speaking skills. But he hadn't counted on receiving a letter by post. It was the first time he had ever received such a thing, and he had taken the letter from the owl with some trepidation, perhaps leery of losing a finger to the creature that delivered it.

When he opened it, he read it thrice over, forgetting for a moment to breathe. There was a tightness in his chest as he felt his heart break for his troubled friend. North Light was afraid. Was he alone? Was he injured? Could Vahn do anything to heal him or help him if he was in danger? Either way, there was no hesitation in cancelling his travel plans. Fumbling with the letter, suddenly all jitters and anxiety, he stuffed the it away into one of Abdul's saddle bags.

"I can't-- I'm sorry, but I have to get to someone faster than you can take me," he told his obstinate Elk companion, speaking in lightning-fast, gibbering Harani dialect. "I'll reunite with you soon."

It took him no more than a couple of minutes from the moment he received the letter to answer the call. He worked his magic deftly, destroying two Hereafter stones in the process, first seeing Abdul away safely, and then tearing open a worldgate to Traveler's Spring. He was antsy and trembly enough, that after stepping through the portal, he didn't quite calculate his landing just right. The young man stumbled upon his exit, tripping and falling to the ground. It took him a few seconds to gather his wits, and scramble to his feet again, looking for North Light's hulking, finely-dressed form.

As Kora rides at a steady trot towards the town she sniffs slightly, the scent of a coming storm still unfamiliar to her. She stares at the horizon cautiously, feeling unsettled as the town comes into view.

“Here we are… again.” Kora mutters to herself as they approach Travelers Spring. She sits up straight as a Worldgate suddenly appears and a familiar figure stumbles out. With a chuckle she directs Kameraad to Wanderer. The horse would lip at Wanderer’s green hair good naturedly.

“Did you also get something in the mail?” She asks, amused.

With his eyes closed, Vahn lifted his arms, feeling blindly at Kameraad's muzzle. He paused, then opened his eyes, looking to the horse, then to Kora, feeling both a sense of relief and a renewed worry wash over him.

"Miss Kora-- ah-," he stammered. "I did. Mister North Light is in trouble-- He said to come immediately and to go to the Inn." His eyes widened with realization. "I don't know where the inn is. D-do you?"

"KORA! WANDERER! YOU CAME!"

North had spotted the pair immediately and raced along the dusty path to meet them. "Y-you really came! I am... I am so happy. Please, I nee-" He hunches over to catch his breath. "Something terrible happened last night. M-my stabilizer... there was music... a-and... a ghost. You said you've dealt with G-ghosts in Perrynore right? I- I- "

North is struggling to form coherent thoughts as his emotions flare between excitement, doubt, and fear.

"It wasn't just a ghost. It was something else... Something important. Something that I- I-... I can't remember. M-my stabilizer..."

Vahn was torn between running to meet North Light, concerned, and turning tail and fleeing. He was still trembling fiercely, just from his worry alone, but was something just instinctively terrifying about someone as large as the Warborn running towards them like that, but it was North Light. He wouldn't hurt a fly.

"Wh-what happened, Mister North Light? Are you hurt? Are you alright?" he asked, standing on his toes to glance at the back of his neck.

When they first met in the City of Towers, he had mentioned his stabilizer, but Vahn didn't see a bulky device attached to him. Because of what he was told in that moment, he thought perhaps that his understanding of what stabilizers were was flawed, and that they weren't nearly as large and obvious as he had assumed--until Laughing Tide showed him a real one. As far as he could tell now, unless there was a different type of stabilizer, North Light didn't have one.

At North Light's frantic approach Kora drops the smirk and frowns, realizing the situation was more dire than she thought. She dismounts in a hurry and but holds back as North Light comes to a stop next to them.

She swats at Wanderer's head lightly before holding up her hands to North Light. "Hey hey hey." She speaks soothingly, as if to a frightened animal "Breathe. You're safe. Sit down, have some water."

Kora gives Wanderer a look and points at Kameraad's saddle bags, where she stores the water.

He flinched at the gentle swat, lifting his hands to guard his head from what he expected to possibly be a vicious beating. Perhaps he wasn't quite over what had happened in Galegarden. Quickly recovering however, he followed her gesture, and hurried over to Kameraad, flipping open one of the saddle bags and sifting through it, to eventually withdraw a canteen. He held it to his chest, and trotted back to the two, holding the canteen up to North Light.

North did not know many Harani, and even fewer had shown kindness to him. He had felt this before, he was certain. Kora's words echo inside him, woven with the voice of another lost to time. His mother, perhaps? He shudders the thought away. The Warborn cannot remember the millennias they've suffered through, and North was fortunate to only remember a century.

"Th-thank you. Of course. I'm sorry." North collects himself, accepting the canteen from Wanderer. "I-If you could follow me. I can explain along the way." He gestures towards the coast.

A strong wind arrives after a notable drop in pressure, drawing in a strong scent of the ocean and a brief respite from the humid and heat. Traveler's spring is notably silent, spare a handful of merchants who are laying down tarps and stowing away their goods.

"I have been rather fond of Solis, especially the hot springs. There is a fierce independent spirit in Austera, unlike the City of Towers. Living here was a prudent choice." He gives himself a nervous smile before stopping briefly. "The road ends here, and we'll continue not 5 minutes up the coast."

"It was a prudent choice. That's what I told myself, but if I were to be honest, there was a certain familiarity with the area. It felt like home -- like I had been here before." He takes in a nervous breath, "In southern Nuia, they call it 'Deja Vu' -- the feeling as if you've experienced something before. I should have known better."

He looks to his companions to make sure they understand. "We Warborn have forgotten more than we can remember. Me, especially. Something happened to me, and I believe it happened here. "

A low rolling thunder creeps in from the south as the sea grows restless. North's eyes are fixed on an old, abandoned manor nestled between the desert coast and the wilds of Mahadevi.

[[ The Harani style manor is surrounded by an overgrown garden, a small gazeebo, and a crumbling fence. It sits beside a community of cottages and farms, nearly camouflaged by its neglect. The roof is intact and the structure is sound. The windows are boarded shut, but the door and gate have long been broken. What remains of the structure is impressive and is a testament to the quality and care of its original construction. The gazeebo in front of the building has completely crumbled -- only the base remains. The garden is a dense grove of chestnut, lemon, and jujube trees that completely envelopes the building ]]

Takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, relieved, as North Light seems to calm down. With a glance at Wanderer she follows the hulking figure of the Warborn. Kora nods along, offering a few affirmative noises, having similar feelings about Solis Headlands and Austera.

As they approach the coast she slows down viewing the wide expanse of water and the dark clouds with some trepidation. She gulps and pushes down her unease before speeding up slightly to keep close to Wanderer and North Light. Safety in numbers.

“You remember this place?” She asks quietly, eyeing the overgrown area with caution, barely being able to see the manor behind it all. “You said there were… Ghosts?”

Vahn puttered after the other two, lips thin and brows furrowed. He wasn't sure how to be of any help in this situation, and Kora's maternal behavior was extremely confusing. He had never seen someone act like that, and didn't quite make the 'maternal' connection that North Light did, having never known a mother.

He stared at the back of the large man's neck. Did he know that he didn't have a stabilizer, but try to convince people he had something smaller to allay their fears? Did he really have some sort of micro stabilizer that he just couldn't see? Did he have no idea that the stabilizer wasn't there, or was he vaguely aware but in intense denial? And, why did Harani use stabilizers on the Warborn at all if one could be as earnest and gentle as North Light was without them? Was it all about subjugation?

His attention was brought back to the present when Kora mentioned ghosts, and at once, he looked excited, peering around for any sign of spirits. What he would give to interview an ancient spirit about the past! He was beaming.

He nods to Kora, and inhales a deep, nervous breath before stepping towards the crashing waves. "Last night I was wandering the shore, hoping to clear my mind. The sky was clear and full of stars with the moons shining brightly overhead. I felt so at peace with myself, so much that I became lost in my own thoughts."

He then turns and begins walking towards the manor. "But then I began to hear a strange familiar music. I turned and the world was suddenly different." He gestures, "This village was no longer here, and that manor had become restored and full of life. There must have been a hundred people there spilling out into the gardens and onto the beach."

"I made my way through the crowd, drawn to the song at its center. There, I saw... myself. I was playing the piano. I- I didn't even know I could!" He turns to look at his companions, ready to explain. "I knew at that moment this was a vision of the past, some sort of lucid dream. Is that possible? It must have been a memory -- I was wearing my old stabilizer. I-it had to be. But never mind that..."

"My eye was then drawn to two Harani. One watched over me while the other tended bar. There was a loud thud. It happened again, and again. The third woke me from my dream."

North reaches the gate of the manor. "When I came to my senses, I found myself inside there, just as we see it now. There was a spirit, its face mauled beyond recognition. I stared for a moment, riddled with disbelief. There was then yet another thud as it stamped its feet against the old wooden floor."

"And so I fled."

Kora glares at Wanderer as she notices his excited expression. Though she keeps quiet as North Light tells his story. Having no knowledge of stabilizers, and having met more Warborn without than with Kora doesn't quite understand the significance. Her face pales considerably at North Light's tale of the ghastly ghosts.

She raises a hand to her face and feels her smooth cheeks, worried that she might get it mauled herself and looks around cautiously. Wondering if it might be nearby while her other hand clutches at the hilt of her sword, feeling all the better for its presence.

"You were inside?" She asks, her voice barely above a whisper and nods at the building. "... And why did you want to go back?" wondering at the insanity of returning.

[[ The interior mirrors the age and neglect of the exterior. The lock on the door is broken, but remains on its hinge. While anything of value has long been stolen, the room retains its tavern layout. A grand piano rests broken on its sides across from a fireplace. Broken glass litters the bar area and a copper cash register sits smashed open on the floor. Between the is a bookshelf that retains several decaying books and a broken lantern. A thick mold creeps along the once-wallpapered walls. The windows are boarded shut, with the only source of light creeping in from the door.]]

"Thud?" Vahn questioned, peering towards the crumbled gazebo. He squinted at it, then towards the sea, and lastly up at the hulking figure of North Light. "What did it sound like? Like stomping, or hitting?"

North looks discouraged at Kora, "I-I thought. I thought this is what you did. Explore the past. Handle ghosts. Isn't that why you went to Perrynore? I thought you could help me understand this. A-and..." admitting, "... I wasn't planning on going back in."

To Wanderer, "The spirit stood there motionless, obviously void of expression. All it did was stomp the ground, its spectral boots hitting the wooden floor. I thought you might understand why."

"Um-" Kora hedges, tilting her head slightly. She considers North Light's expression, feeling a bit of guilt well up like stomach acid.

"Well-" she coughs to hide the cracking of her voice. "Yes. That's us. Handle ghosts." She nods, and attempts a strained smile.
