Vahn glanced at the Dragonfruit, then to his comrade. He looked a little guilty, eyes wide as he let his gaze fall into his lap. "Um..." he started. "That would be nice, but I don't have any money, so Miss Korra's been kindly assisting me."

He shifted slightly, then righted his posture a little more. "Rather than become a burden to her and borrow more money, could I trade something with you for your services? I make ink, paper, matcha, and medicines, and also write. I have a small, cleaned pelt in my bag, and a few Hereafter stones as well, if any of those would be useful to you."

Korra frowned, feeling a little guilty about not helping her travelling companion. "It's alright-" She mumbled quietly, reluctantly. "You're assisting me and everything."

"Well," Maru spoke "A fair trade is worth just as much. I could use a good pelt, and a pot of ink. Do you have any blue?" He then indicated the pot of tea, wordlessly asking if they wanted a refill.

Vahn nodded his acceptance for a refill, then took his travel pack off, setting it beside him on the floor. "It's a sort of lighter blue, if that's alright," he said, withdrawing a grey-brown rabbit pelt from the bag, and a folded leather wrap. He unwrapped the leather wrap, revealing a few small rectangular sticks. Some had already been partially ground down. The blue one seemed to be still perfectly in tact for the most part, and could be ground down for plenty of ink to last a while. The Wanderer withdrew this little ink block, then offered both the pelt and ink to Maru with a polite bow.

Maru stood and accepted the ink and pelt with a bow. He admired the pelt for a moment, nodding happily. "I will put these away. Meanwhile," He said, waving at the Dragonfruit near the window. "Make your choice."

Most of the Dragonfruit were of average size. Though one looked like the runt of the litter- smaller than the others and a few dents marring its surface. One of them had a slight green discoloration in a strange pattern over the shell. Another one's shape was slightly distorted.

Korra looked on curiously and then smiled at Wanderer. "Do any of them feel different to you?" She whispered.

For a moment, he sat, staring at the selection. He was stuck on the first few that stood out to him as somewhat unique, but the first one he had noticed was the smaller one. Korra's whisper made him flinch slightly, then he glanced at her, and back to the fruit again. "T... the little one... I think feels right?"

"Then you should take it!" Korra said, nodding. "Go with your gut feeling."

Right then Maru returned from the other room. He smiled encouragingly at Wanderer but didn't say anything to rush him. He sat back down near the plate and cleaned the remaining juice and seeds off with a small towel. Then he leaned back.

"Whenever you're ready."

Vahn nodded and stood to cross the room and pick up the little runty Dragonfruit. He picked it up with a careful tenderness that befit as gentle and skittish a man as he, and returned to his spot, offering the fruit to Maru. He knelt politely, watching with some fretful anticipation.

Maru took the fruit gently, like with Korra's, he carefully trailed his hands over it as if trying to get a feel for it before he took the short, sharp knife next to him and cut into it expertly before breaking it apart. Juice and a few seeds slid over and down his hands before dripping onto the platter.

He put down the dragonfruit and leaned closer, observing for a few moments.

Korra glanced from Wanderer to Maru to the Dragonfruit. She craned her neck to get a better look at it, wondering what it spelled out for him.

"Hmm." Maru mumbled as he rubbed a thumb through his stubble. He pointed at a bunch of seeds that lay on the plate. "These indicate there are a multitude of new possibilities in your future. Some lead to greatness, some to suffering." Then he smiled slightly "Some will lead to joy. As overwhelming as these possibilities are." His hand now hovered over one of the halves of the fruit "You will need to trust yourself to make the right decisions."

"Lastly," Maru pointed at the other half of the dragonfruit, it contained only a few seeds in an odd circle. "You will need people to help you, you cannot do it alone. That is your fortune."

He looked a little worried about the possibilities he was presented with. It sounded very much like things could either be very, very good, or very, very bad, with little room for things in between. He wasn't quite sure how to avoid the bad, nor how to ensure that good things would happen, but the last bit of his fortune was clear. He needed to stop living his life as a lonesome hermit, and he needed to stop second-guessing his instincts.

With a polite and low bow to Maru, nearly touching his head to the mat upon which he sat, he mumbled his flustered thanks, then sat straight again, looking to Korra. "D-do you think we're ready to start our journey?"

"Yes," Korra said with a determined nod. "I guess there's no reason to linger." She looked down at her hands for a moment and then nodded again before she got up. From one of the pockets in her jacket she withdrew some currency and held it out to Maru with an awkward bow.

"Thank you for your time and expertise." She said quite formally.

Maru accepted the payment and nodded politely to both his visitors. "Of course. Good luck on your journey, both of you."

Korra looked at Wanderer and then nodded at the door. "Lets go?"

Vahn echoed the bow with a lower, possibly more formal one, then straightened, his eyes still on Korra. He smiled warmly to her and nodded. "I'm ready. A-after you."

Once again he followed her, at least through the narrow stairs. Once they were back on the street proper, he scurried a bit to catch up with her and keep pace, walking beside her as they started towards the city limits. "So um- What did you think about your fortune?"

Once back down the stairs Korra greeted Kameraad happily and patted his neck while she thought over Wanderer's question. She turned to him, frowning slightly.

"I don't know." She said honestly "Not so surprised, I suppose though-" she then smiled and shrugged "I do wonder what the perilous journey will be." She grabbed Kameraad by the reins and turned to walk back towards the main district of the city.

"What about yourself? You've been alone for so long, isn't it daunting?"

Considering her question, he sort of waggled his head from side to side--another way of shrugging. "I left to see the world, and I suppose that involves all of the people in it. I just didn't have a great introduction," he said, pointing to his still somewhat bruised eye. "Hopefully... more people are like you."

"Oh." Korra flushed, pleased at the compliment and then shrugged awkwardly, looking away from Wanderer. "I'm not that nice, really-" She coughed and shook her head.

"Is that what happened to you?" she pointed at his bruises, eager to change the subject.

He nodded, touching the tender, bruised flesh underneath his eye. "I stopped and spoke to a nice woman dressed in silks. Then some men, also in silks, got offended and took her away, and said that I was out of line and interfering with 'the young lord's betrothed.'" He hedged. "I... wasn't really sure what that meant, and then they attacked me. I almost went home after that but... they didn't stop until I lost consciousness, and when I did, I had a dream of Aranzeb leaving the woods to go to Delphinad."

“They beat you up for talking to a woman?” Korra asked with a frown, then thought about it for a moment, turning over exactly what he said in her mind. “Some people,” she explained “believe that they are better than others. Usually they’re rich, or they’re related to important people.” To emphasise how unimportant people are, Korra used quotation marks unironically.

“They consider us,” she pointed at herself and her clothes and then at Wanderer’s “To be below their attention. And when you challenge that by say- talking to some idiot’s fiancee they get angry.”

She crossed her arms and mentally repeated her words, satisfied she explained it well enough she nodded

"A-ah," he said in reply, pressing his fingers gently against the bruised flesh to test just how tender it still felt. "Duly noted, thank you. It's unfortunate, because she really was very friendly, and I would have liked to speak to her more, but I suppose it's not so easy to change the way the world works. I've read books about Haslan nobility, but none of my books ever touched on proper etiquette for dealing directly with them. Mh, maybe I should write that down."

“Avoid, is how you deal with them.” Korra said dismissively and changed the subject. “You came here on an airship, yes? And you didn’t have to pay? Perhaps we can take one to Perinoor.” She rubbed her chin thoughtfully and then looked to Kameraad.

“You’ll be fine on an airship, no?”

Vahn nodded to both of her questions, smiling gently, lowering his hand to hang at his side again. "Yes, that would be fine. I really enjoyed the ride, to be honest. Ha- have you been on one?"

At Wanderer’s question Korra paled a little. “N- no, I haven’t. But I’ve seen them pass overhead. It- It’s sturdy enough, right?”
