[Continuation of Amidst the Stacks]

Tall towers and massive sandstone fortifications could do little against the brightness of the Mahadevi sun. It was searing and bright as ever, cutting a sharp glare even through the windows of the inn at which two adventurers had bedded down in the City of Towers. The day was humid, as were most days in the jungly region, but the heat of the day was mild enough for comfortable travel.

True to his word, the slight, unimposing green-haired Harani had woken early, with the sunrise. He wasn't up long before his new companion, Korra, finding just enough time to settle into a chair at an empty table. During his short wait, he immediately set out a thick tome, flipping it open to a page he had left on, and salvaged a small wooden cup from his bag, as well as a squat bamboo canister. He filled his cup with water, conjured seemingly from thin air, then touched the brim of the wooden cup, until the liquid within began to emit a wisp of steam.

He opened up the little bamboo canister, peering down into what was one part ground matcha powder, and one part white medicinal powder of some sort. Having practiced this morning ritual for several years, he was able to begin his reading while he mixed portions of both powders into his water, and to tuck away all but his prepared cup of tea as well.

A bit later than normal Korra descended the stairs to the main room of the inn. While she seemed awake enough the slight bags under her eyes pointed to a night of restless sleep. As she caught sight of Wanderer she frowned and ran a hand through her short hair.

She made a slight detour to the counter to grab a bowl of rice soup and a cup of green tea before making her way to Wanderer.

“Good morning.” Korra murmured softly as she sat down at the table, smoothing away her misgivings.

Vahn seemed not to have noticed Korra until the very moment she sat across from him and spoke, flinching a little when he lifted his gaze. A little late, a polite yet sincere smile touched his lips, and he dipped his head in a small greeting. "Good morning, Miss Korra. Did you sleep well?" he asked.

He somewhat regretted asking that, noting the bags under her eyes. It didn't look like she had the best sleep, and now he felt it may have been insensitive to ask.

“Fine.” She dismissed with a short wave of her hand. “Yourself?”

She indicated her bowl of rice soup. “If you’d like something to eat- we get a bowl each with the room.”

Vahn glanced at the bowl of soup, then shook his head, still offering her that warm smile, albeit a little tight-lipped. He looked very much like the thought of eating anything right at present made him feel ill. After his wordless refusal, he leaned forward a bit, expression shifting to curious interest.

"Who do you go to to get your fortune told?" he asked, harkening to their last discussion the evening prior. "Do you already know someone, or is this a... commercial service?"

At Wanderer’s response Korra shrugged and brought the first spoonful of soup to her mouth. She chewed slowly and swallowed before answering.

“It’s a commercial service, I suppose- But I already know someone.” She stirred her soup thoughtfully “In some places they are free- but here in the City we’ll need some silver. And the Dragon Fruits can be expensive.” then she smirked slightly “But I brought my own.”

Vahn nodded slowly, quirking a brow. "You brought your own dragonfruit?" he asked. "I've never actually seen one in person, but they sound like they're pretty big. Is that what was in Kameraad's saddle bags?"

“Yes,” Korra spoke between bites of her breakfast “I left it with Kameraad. I took one of the smaller ones, but it’s still too heavy to carry on me.”

She paused for a moment, a spoonful of soup hovering in the air dangerously. She narrowed her eyes. “Those idiots from yesterday had better not have damaged it.” She said in a threatening tone.

“The fortune teller lives on the North side of the city, we can go when we finish.”

"If they did, maybe there's a way that we can purchase a new one?" he asked gently. "I don't know much about money, but my grandfather told me that when he went to The Outside, he'd sometimes use our manuscripts to get more supplies. I suppose he sold them?"

"They're very overpriced here." Korra said with a frown of displeasure. "They don't grow them locally- Importing goods makes the price go up." She clarified after a moment, pointing her thumb upward.

"He probably sold them?" She shrugged. "Some merchants also trade. But for a book...?" She tapped her lip thoughtfully and then seemed to dismiss the idea as unlikely.

"I found one of the books that I wrote in the library," he offered. "It wasn't the original--I wrote it all by hand. It looked like a copy made at a printing press. If... if a merchant wouldn't buy one directly, maybe I could bring it to a printer and offer to sell it for, er, currency? Then in turn trade the currency for... for dragonfruit. Or other goods and services."

Vahn seemed like a fairly intelligent boy, but when it came to how money and trade worked, he was very clearly inexperienced. All he had done was correctly puzzle out what just about everyone knew. You could do things to make money, and spend money on things.

“You could do that.” She said reluctantly, glancing at the door of the inn. In the short time she’d come down the stairs she had already finished most of her rice soup- eager to get going. “Though you’d have to see how much your manuscripts sell for.”

She took a sip of her tea and winced as she burnt her tongue slightly. Then she glanced at Wanderer, curious. “What other… Goods and services would you like to spend money on?”

"Um-" he replied, blinking at her in surprise. "I don't know. I suppose if I could buy anything, I'd buy books?" He canted his head, looking uncertain if books fell under the category of goods or services, then dismissed the thought with a shake of his head, and another warm smile.

He took her cue, and finished off his tea, then rose. He waved his hand over the wooden cup, and in the blink of an eye, it was clean of any residue from his tea, as though it had never before been used. He tucked it carefully back into his heavy bag, then stood, slinging it over his shoulder. "You look eager to depart. I'll follow your lead."

Korra nodded, unsurprised he would want more books. She smirked as she also stood,. “You’d have to buy a house, and a bookshelf to keep them on- that’s how it works.” When he tucked away his cup she raised her eyebrows but didn’t bother to comment before heading towards the exit. She waved at the innkeeper on her way out.

“It’s a good walk from here.” She said, glancing behind her before she pulled Kameraad from the stable where she totally put him before, because that’s what a good owner does. She carefully opened one of the saddle bags and rummaged inside for a few moments..

“Still looks intact.” Korra said, nodding happily and giving Kameraad a thorough chin rub. The horse closed his eyes and leaned into the touch.

Vahn followed along, brows raised. "Ah, a house? I suppose I sort of have one, but it's so far..."

He paused behind her, standing on his toes to try to steal a glance at the dragonfruit, looking very much like he was itching to withdraw his journal and take notes, in the event that he actually got to see the thing.

Korra eyed Wanderer’s eagerness with a critical look. She frowned and narrowed her eyes. She glanced at Kameraad and then back at her green-haired travelling companion. She sighed.

“You know-” She said slowly, reluctantly “It is good luck, and we are travelling together so- if you want I can buy you a dragonfruit and you can also have your fortune read.” She shrugged then and turned away, pulling on Kameraad’s reins to head north.

Vahn half-blinked, surprised by Korra's offer. He recalled that she seemed upset the night prior about spending coin on his behalf, though he would have been happy to set up camp outside the gates of the City of Towers. He pressed his lips together, groping for a suitable reply. "That's a very kind offer, but I don't want you to feel obligated to do anything like that."

“Okay!” Korra agreed readily, though feeling a little guilty. If she continued to spend as frugally as she had been there was no reason to deny Wanderer a Dragonfruit. She cleared her throat.

“Looks like we can avoid the busiest areas.” She said gratefully as she pointed at the busy main road. “Come on.” And she set a good pace heading towards a residential area, Kameraad following obediently.

Vahn followed along, finally caving to his desire to withdraw his journal and pen, which he kept tucked into the front of his tunic. He managed to keep pace with her while writing feverishly, looking around like a tourist who'd never quite gotten to absorb the sights and sounds of the city.

While they walked Korra kept a suspicious eye out for anyone and anything near them, not half as used to city life as she would like. As they came to a residential district filled with small houses stacked together she pulled out a map. Glancing at it and then around her she nodded and continued along.

Eventually they came to a small house, it blended in with the others around it except for a small sign out front.

“Madam Centipede’s fortunes” it read in colorful letters. Korra eyed it for a long moment before tying Kameraad to the nearest available surface. She patted his neck and murmured a reassurance.
