Many of you have been wondering what sort of naming traditions can be found in ArcheAge. Unsurprisingly, the societies found in ArcheAge are post-enlightenment quasi-multicultural societies, and naming traditions are not overly stringent. Since there is no real "pattern" I can provide to you, I've taken some time to run around the game and collect names based on race and gender. Hopefully, what I have gathered proves useful to those out you out there already planning for your character(s) at launch!

Since first posting this, I have noticed a difference in regional naming conventions. I'll further break it all down at a later time!

You can repost this if you'd like, but please link back to the original thread here on ArcheAgeRoleplay.com if you do. Many thanks!

Seems I lied! There are, in fact, differences in naming traditions between the regions. Most of the Harani in Hasla have very Eastern Asian names.

Very nice post there Wanderer! I don't tend to follow naming conventions myself but for those looking for inspiration this is a treasure trove of jumping off points.

Well done

This is the sort of thing all games should have if only to aid roleplayers and those after a slightly more lore specific name for a character.

You missed Warborn names off but its not a big deal since i suspect they dont really use regular names anyway being a race created for war an all.

Far as I'm aware, there are no Warborn NPCs in the game. I still have to go West and research Elf, Nuian and Dwarf names as well. There are probably no fairies yet either.

Yeah i suspect warborn will show up in the north no doubt as a tie in to whatever orchidna is upto.

As for the fae(i refuse to call them fairies) they'll probably have gaelic style names since most fantasy fiction seems to go that route.

I can take down some names when I log in tonight for the Nuian and Elf names, if ya haven't already done so!

from the few elven names people have seen on npc's would you say they have a similar theme to the names? im kind of curious as i have a name in mind but im wondering if one of my back ups may fit better given some of them are korean and my top choice is gaelic...im sure i wont matter but still.

Thank you Behraal. I'd be very grateful if you could do that. :D

Mm, at first I thought there wasn't really a theme, but then I started seeing trends. Naming conventions seem more regional than racial. In Hasla, the farthest east territory available to us, complete with very eastern-Asian architecture, there are more Asiatic names than there are in the Western territories of Haranya, even for the Harani.

i've decided to blend a couple of things together for the name, korean last name with irish.gaelic first(of a sort as i tweaked it abit) i think i'll just use that for my elf for now then come up with something else if i decide to remake her as an alt at launch.

I have a sort of character profile for her but im gonna hold off on posting it until i've had a mess around with the character creation tools once i download alpha early next week.

I haven't seen any straight up Korean names, but I think just about anything goes to be honest. Unless your character name is Batman or Awesomeassassin, you're probably good. XD

yeah lol well im kinda happy with the name i chose and the profile is sorta workable if sparse atm so i may just upload it later then tweak it once i make the character.

Megatron and Xxsephirothxx are also not appropriate alternatives!

OKAY! Okay! I get it, alright? At least the Returned has got my own name on the list, so I guess I have that going for me.

Come launch, I'd be more than willing to help you out on developing the list of Nuian, Elven and Dwarven names based on NPCs encountered and such, as well as a compiled video of the quest cutscenes from the Nuian racial storyline. I'm such a lore junket whenever I get into a new game. Perhaps I could fish out some interesting tidbits from the quests I encounter.

I never did bother with reading during beta, and I skipped all of the cutscenes since I wanted to save that for when I actually started playing for real.

From what I've seen, a lot of the Elf names seem pretty generic, like the kind you'd see in an elven name generator. Nuians have pretty generic names if I remember correctly. Like Elder McGee. That guy. I wasn't sure if I should've laughed or cringed when I saw his name. Cannot confirm that right now.

Omg. I haven't paid much attention to things pre-launch, but I just have to see this...

The names for npc's seem very generic on the western side and abit of a letdown for firren given there culture...im happy with Tahmoh though as it has that uniqueness to it and also from research may have links to canadian innuit tribal naming which i think fits fairly well for a firren :)

Went with Rahne for my elf which is gaelic and fits the character well.

Very nice!
I just... went with the simplest thing I could think of that could mesh the personalities and aspects of my previous characters together while allowing the character enough freedom to be her own person.

Rhowen... Eleanora...

Rho + Nora = Roa

It's good that Nuian and Elven names are more on the culturally generic side, convenience-wise. But hopefully we can still find some interesting ones out there.
